List your stop loss here
«

Hello,
It appears that adding some stop loss orders to the portfolios is pretty popular.
It is not yet proven what is the long term effect of the stop loss on the overall return of the portfolios (some future good performer could be cut this way) until we could run some back tests on our portfolios.
In the mean time, we could list in this thread when you guys actually cut a stock with a stop loss order. And when the stock is actually sold in the porfolio, I will update your post to compare your performance with the performance without the stop loss order.
This way, we would quite easily see if stop loss orders are more profitable.

burd,
I duplicate a part of your post in the thread "How does eyeryone else use the system?" in order to list your stop loss in this dedicated thread:
IMX, -8%, sold at 5.75 in Low PEG Ratio
-> Sold by the Super Stock Picker at 5.66
=> The stop loss was more efficient!

Stop loss are good.
Trailing stop loss are even better.
But I believe
that posting the value you have decided to sell your stock is a no no.
I make a mental/paper/yahoo portofolio note of it
and it is only after a close
that I check if a stop loss value has been reached.
I then make the selling order for the morning after.
Thanks,
Jacqueline

Hello jackiegl,
Indeed, the objective of this thread is not to list the active stop loss orders you have put on your positions, but to list the sells that have been triggered this way.
After the Super Stock Picker sells the same stock, the post can be updated to list both sell prices and see if stop loss orders really add value on the trades.

I use stops on all my stocks. If I get an order to sell I will set the stop at the low of the previous day and adjust every day till it sells. I still own ZCL now with a stop at 11.41. Its given me another 10% since the sell order came through. On the down side I stopped out of WIN at 3.91 and it has since bounced. I'll buy back in if it continues to recover.

-> Sold by Super Stock Picker at 12.96
=> The stop loss was not efficient!

Hello jeff,
Thank you for your input.
Can you tell us what threshold you had on this stop loss that has triggered the sale?

I saw short term topping signal: wide range down day with volume. I use TA for my trading and I don't like the long red candle on the top of the chart. In most cases, the price will turn down from here, or at the best, it will go sideways and take quite some time to overcome this heavy red candle.
Yesterday I waited some time to see if VNX could recover most or even better all of the losses, that would be very bullish. when i saw that it might not make it, i sold out.

I also stopped out of VNX on March 20th at $11.25. I had placed my stop just below the 50% retracement point of the last run.
-> Sold by Super Stock Picker at 12.96
=> The stop loss was not efficient!

bryanmcn, jeff,
I have updated your post with the sell of VNX at 12.96.
In that particular case, it was better not to use any stop loss strategy to exit the position.

When the order to sell VNX came through I set my stop just below the low of the previous day (Friday). I ended up stopping out intra day at $12.55.

I stopped out of TIM today at $3.46. Technically it crossed below its half way retraction point (around $3.80) and is under the $3.50 support level formed in the first week or two of May. If it continues past $3 it is officially on a downward trend.
